Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
Visit India’s most beautiful Bird Sanctuary to catch a glimpse of some of the most amazing birds in their natural habitat! Sprawling over 25 sq.kms at the distance of around 60 km from Kochi, the bird sanctuary is on the northern bank of the Periyar River. Dr. Salim Ali discovered Thattekad as the richest bird habitat of peninsular India and it was named as a Bird Sanctuary in the year 1983. The dense forest offers a safe paradise for birds and is visited by nearly 280 species of domestic and migratory birds. Really an interesting place to visit for birdies and wildlife enthusiasts!
Picnic at Bhoothathankettu Dam & Reserve Forest
A short drive from Thattekad can bring you to this beautiful dam and its surroundings. The dam is vibrant with colors & you can take the forest route to the ancient ‘Bhoothathankettu’ through the forest with giant trees. Boating on the dam premises is another attraction here.
Visit Paniyeli Poru
A lovely picnic spot at Paniyeli, near Thattekad, is part of the Periyar river. Surrounded by rich greenery, the spot is nestled in the Malayattoor forest range. Paniyeli Poru offers plenty of opportunities for adventure lovers.
Elephant rides at Kodanad Elephant Sanctuary
A very peaceful and pleasant place close to Thattekad on the banks of Periyar River is the Kodanad Elephant Sanctuary. It’s one of the famous training centers of Elephants. There is a small wildlife park at the center housing deer and other wildlife. Elephant rides through the park are offered here for tourists.
